Salzgitter AG and its subsidiaries joined forces with Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in getting SCALIGHT project up und running. SCALIGHT is a showcase for pioneering solutions, demonstrating how series manufacturing in Germany can be both technically innovative and economically sound.

After fourteen years of operation and 24 million tons of pig iron, blast furnace A was certainly in need of a little care and attention. It was relined in the middle of this year and now meets the state of the art and is ready for the next furnace campaign.

Compared with conventional oils, dry lubricants (hotmelts or “dry lubes”) offer key advantages for the storage and processing of high-grade steel. On request, Salzgitter Flachstahl treats its steel with hotmelt – a dry lubricant with a particularly high melting point.

New steel product with outstanding properties
Salzgitter and Corus have been working together on identifying opportunities for the application of High Strength and Ductility (HSD®)-steels in selected market sectors.

In the past, changing coatings resulted in long downtimes in the coil-coating line. Salzgitter Flachstahl is now replacing the existing coater with a state-of-the-art shuttle coater. This cutting-edge shuttle coater is set to increase the productivity of the line, as well as further enhance product quality.

“Steelworks – Stahlwerke” is the name of an exhibition of the work of painter Thorsten Freye that was featured at the Schloss Salder Museum in Salzgitter. The exhibition comprised some 30 large-size paintings and ten drawings by the painter, as well as eight digitally processed photographs on a related theme by the Salzgitter AG photographer, Peter Lenke. In the course of the required auditing by Lloyds Register of Quality Assurance (LRQA) which is to be done every six months in order to maintain our ISO TS 16949:2002 certificate, the quality management system of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH was again successfully audited between July 4th and July 5th, 2005.

Effective July 1, 2006, electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers and their suppliers will feel the full impact of a change in environmental legislation. This is the date on which the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (EU Directive 2002/95/EC) takes effect.
