REACH stands for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization of Chemicals. The aim is to establish uniform European chemical legislation. Against this backdrop, project teams concerned with the REACh regulation are being formed both on the Group level (Salzgitter AG) as well as on the level of Salzgitter Flachstahl.

Ulrich Grethe (48, graduate of engineering) has been appointed as member of the Executive Board of Salzgitter Stahl GmbH and chairman of the Management Board of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH as of January 1, 2010.

Salzgitter Flachstahl actively supports its customers in selecting materials, also in the course of the early development process. Due to the fact that dynamically oscillating forces underly most components made of steel sheet, it is also necessary to determine characteristics for describing the load-bearing capacity under these forces and to describe the material's performance.

Demands for lightweight construction and cost reductions and competition with other construction materials have prompted increased development of new grades of steel in recent years. 
Increased strengths and improved forming characteristics, utilization characteristics and processing characteristics distinguish the latest steel innovations.

Electrolytic galvanizing of steel strip involves using a direct current to deposit a zinc coating on the strip. In the course of our continuous improvement activities, two sub-areas in electrolytic galvanizing have been optimized.

Lightweight design and construction are gaining increasing significance in the automotive industry, as well as throughout the entire transport sector. In this context, reduced fuel consumption and lower emission levels rank as two key objectives, among others.

Since 2005, Salzgitter Flachstahl has been developing an innovative hot-dip coating in a joint project conducted with Corus. The zinc-magnesium coating can be used as a substitute for hot-dip galvanization and similar techniques, but it is also suitable as a substrate material for organic coatings such as FOLASTAL. In both cases, customers profit from the outstanding product characteristics.

The fundamental tasks of Salzgitter Flachstahl's power plant include providing uninterrupted supplies of process steam, electricity and condensate to the production plants, and also receiving exhaust steam and condensate from the steel mills. Each year around 34,000 Terajoule of fuel accumulate in the form of cupola furnace gases (coking plant gas and blast furnace gas) that develop in the blast furnace, coking plant and steel plant process.

At the end of March 2009, the new E-Class rolled off the production lines headed straight for the Mercedes dealers. Also included: the LH800® air-hardened steel from Salzgitter. The vehicle's front axle structure’s complete integral member is manufactured from this material.
