Hanover Fair 2010 – The Highlights
The trade fair stand of the Salzgitter Group
A look into the future on the fairgrounds in Hannover. From April 19 to 23, 2010, Salzgitter Flachstahl showcased latest novelties and interesting developments revolving around state of the art steels and their utilization. At the “Industrial Supply“ event the Salzgitter Group and its subsidiaries showcased their products and dialoged with customers and partners.
The trade fair stand featured exhibits focusing on Stroncoat
® and bainitic hot rolled steels, while the Career Market featured air hardened steels.
Body shell of Ford Fiesta
The body shell of the current Ford Fiesta was a highlight at this year’s trade fair stand. Ford’s engineers made extensive use of modern high strength and ultra high strength steels in developing this model. Around two thirds of the body shell structure consist of these steels. Salzgitter Flachstahl supplies products of various dimensions for this vehicle, including modern IF-steels and bake hardening steels, as well as high strength micro-alloyed steels.
SZBS 600 / 800 - Bainitic hot rolled steels

Transverse linke made of SZBS 600
As before, Salzgitter AG and its companies Salzgitter Flachstahl and Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung are supporting chassis development with the bainitic hot rolled steels
SZBS 600 and
SZBS 800. The transverse link made of SZBS 600 helps reduce the weight of the front axle of the new Ford Fiesta. Good forming properties and weldability in connection with high strength and excellent durability are key advantages of these bainitic hot rolled steels.
Together with Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung and in cooperation with Corus, Salzgitter Flachstahl has developed a new generation of protective coating. As opposed to conventional hot dip galvanizing the new coating contains 1 to 2 percent magnesium and aluminum respectively, in addition to zinc. Consequently, Stroncoat® offers substantially improved corrosion protection in connection with reduced coating layer thickness. From today’s viewpoint, this offers a great deal of scope for future customer developments in the development of coating and painting of products, as well as the process optimization of these manufacturing steps.

LH800® integral subframe of Mercedes E-Class in the Career Market
The
LH800® air hardened steel grades by Salzgitter Flachstahl were especially developed for automotive manufacturing. They meet customer demands for lightweight engineering while offering excellent crash properties at the same time. Air hardened steels are soft on delivery, enable excellent formability in the production of complex components and are extremely hard as finished components thanks to subsequent heat treatment. The so-called “post forming heat treatment“ provides these steels with additional strength and offers an alternative to the press hardening of ultra high strength components. In view of their very good forming properties in connection with high strength, LH
® steels are an attractive alternative to other materials when high stability in connection with minimal weight is called for.
The latest generation Mercedes E-Class featuring an integral subframe made of LH800
® has been on the market since March 2009. The engine, transmission, front axle and steering system are mounted to this subframe. By contrast with the predecessor made of aluminum, the weight and costs of the integral subframe have been significantly reduced.
At the Career Market in Hall 6 pupils and students had the opportunity to learn more about Salzgitter Flachstahl as a future employer. They also had the chance to try their hand at cooking steel. What ingredients are required for a steel cocktail for the production of an integral subframe? And in what proportions will the ingredients have to mixed? There was a surprise in store for the best steel cooks. As further insight into the Salzgitter Flachstahl product range, they were able to learn more about the product properties of LH800
® air hardened steel.
Many interested pupils and students took advantage of the opportunity to exchange information with Human Resource representatives and established first contacts with the Salzgitter Group.

For many of our customers, the traditional Steel Day on Tuesday features as an important date in their trade fair calendar. This year, around 500 customers and partners of Salzgitter AG met at the Expo-Pavilion to engage in extensive dialogs or deepen existing contacts. Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Leese, Executive Board Chairman of Salzgitter AG, opened the event. Subsequently, Johannes Nonn, Executive Board member responsible for the Steel Division, addressed the current situation on the steel markets, the cost and contractual situation in raw materials as well as the progress of the ongoing investment program. He also reported on the current status of the construction of a second electric arc furnace at Peiner Träger GmbH and the commissioning of the fourth continuous casting plant that commenced in February and is now in the ramp-up phase. The casting dimensions are a special feature of this facility. With a casting width of 2.600 mm and a thickness of up to 350 mm the plant is an important step in pursuing the Group’s course towards further specialization on higher grade premium steels.
