The term hotmelt denotes dry lubricants on mineral oil base that have a higher melting temperature, i.e. they exhibit a wax-like consistency at room temperature. Thanks to its consistency, the oiling agent does not run off from the center to the edges of the strip products even during extended shelf times.
The hotmelt lubricants not only offer increased stability of the oil film during extended periods of storage, but also further advantages. The agents increase corrosion protection of the steel coils during their transport and in storage and enhance cleanliness in the production process (unwinding, straightening, cutting and stacking). Moreover, the dry lubricants have a lower tendency to sticking, i.e. it becomes easier to lift plates which have been coated with hotmelt off the stack.
What is more, compared to standard forming oils, this type of lubricant offers several other advantages for the forming of complex geometries. With the same application layer thickness, the average friction values are improved by 10 percent. The stable lubricant film also enables multiphase processes that involve complex deep drawing and stretch forming operations, in certain cases, additional oiling can be dispensed with.
Compared to standard forming and anti-corrosive oils, hotmelt lubricants provide advantages in terms of improved corrosion protection and stable oil films for storage and the forming process in the forming mill. Case studies on specific components at customers' locations showed that the lower reject rates in the manufacturing process achieved with the application of hotmelt lubricants is at least cost-neutral.
Salzgitter Flachstahl offers hotmelt lubricants for the product portfolio comprising cold-rolled steel sheet, hot-dip galvanized steel sheet, electrolytic galvanized steel sheet, as well as strip-coated steel sheet. The hotmelt is applied inline, or on the coil plants.
