Hot-strip mill resumes operation

Since 5.30 a. m. on May 5th, the hot-strip mill is rolling again. On April 19th, production had to be stopped due to a motor failure on the roughing stand. Repairing this motor posed a special challenge as the segment in question weighs approx. 95 tons and had to be overhauled in a special workshop of Messrs. Siemens in Essen.

Thanks to the unfailing and excellent co-operation of all partners involved, the complex damage to the 19-year-old motor could be fixed at record speed. Salzgitter Flachstahl wishes to express special thanks to the following companies: Siemens, Verkehrsbetriebe Peine Salzgitter, Salzgitter Service und Technik and Deutsche Bundesbahn for their active and unbureaucratic support and to the “Institut für Antriebssysteme und Leistungselektronik” of the University of Hannover for its advisory service in analysing the damage.
