History

1937	The industrial area in Salzgitter, including the steelworks under the umbrella of „Reichswerke Hermann Göring“, is established.
1939	First pig iron production
1942	Within the steelworks, plants for the production of ammunition are built and slave labourers and inmates form the concentration camp in Drütte have to work there.
1949	Restart of pig iron production after world war; diassambly of plants by the allied forces.
1950	End of disassambly after demonstrations of the employees.
1951	The name "Reichswerke AG für Bergbau und Hüttenbetriebe" is modified into "Aktiengesellschaft für Bergbau und Hüttenbetriebe".
1961	Change of name to Salzgitter Hüttenwerke AG
1970	Merger of Salzgitter Hüttenwerke and Ilseder Hütte. At the same time the company's name is changed to Stahlwerke Peine-Salzgitter AG.
1992	Renamed to Preussag Stahl AG
1995	Opening of the memorial place at the former concentration camp Drütte on the premises of the steelworks.
1998	While going public (at the stock exchange), the company is renamed to Salzgitter AG
2001	The group restructures itself. Consolidated beneath a management holding, independent companies are working within a dezentralized organisation. The steelworks at Salzgitter turn into Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH
