Salzgitter AG adds low CO2 steel grades to its product range

Salzgitter AG has successfully produced the first low CO2 green steel slab (input material for rolling and downstream processing) in the Peine steel mill. The Group will therefore be able to offer its customers green strip steel products in differentiated dimensions and grades even before the end of 2020. The CO2 footprint of this product is 75% less than in the case of conventional production.
Following the conversion of a continuous casting line, the keen interest in such materials can now be serviced. The slabs will subsequently be rolled into hot and cold strips at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. These environmentally compatible steel products can be deployed for all customary purposes, such as in vehicle construction, the building trade and in industrial applications.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann, Chief Executive Officer of Salzgitter AG, commented as follows: “The Salzgitter Group is a pioneer in the production of low CO2 steel. We are demonstrating this yet again by setting up our production route of green steel via the Peine mini mill and the rolling process in Salzgitter. A large number of customers consider it important to take delivery of a real, physical reduced-CO2 product now rather than being satisfied with more or less theoretical CO2 footprint projections.
Furthermore, together with our partners we are intensively working on switching steel production to a low CO2, hydrogen-based process through our “SALCOS – Salzgitter Low CO2Steelmaking” innovation project, which will enable a reduction in CO2 of up to 95%.”
