FolaSal®- - certified and monitored coating systems for applications in the construction sector

Special quality requirements apply to construction products in Germany, which are defined by national construction legislation. To a certain extent, this also applies to precursors and starting materials for construction applications. For example, our coil-coated products (FolaSal® ), which are intended for further processing into load-bearing thin-walled profiles such as trapezoidal profiles or sandwich elements, must be proven to exhibit certain corrosion protection properties. This proof can be achieved either by an approval issued by the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) or by certification in accordance with DIN 55634-1. In both cases, a classification of the coating systems into a corrosivity category is made based on extensive laboratory tests and, in some cases, outdoor weathering results.

In building interiors with low corrosion exposure, coating systems of corrosivity category C2 usually find use, while for exterior building applications in atmospheres with moderate corrosion exposure, systems of corrosivity category C3 are generally applied.

Salzgitter Flachstahl is currently offering the following C2 systems

FolaSal®StronSal® ZM100 + 15 µm polyester (building authority approval)
FolaSal® Z275 + 15 µm polyester (product certificate)

and the following C3 systems

FolaSal®StronSal® ZM120 + 25 µm polyester (building authority approval)
FolaSal®StronSal® ZM 140 + 25 µm polyester (building authority approval)
FolaSal® Z275+25 µm polyester (product certificate)
FolaSal® Z275 + 25 µm PVDF (product certificate)

According to DIN 55634, a high duration of protection, i.e. at least 15 years, can be assumed in the respective corrosivity category if the material is used properly and the coating is maintained accordingly.

The high quality of the above-mentioned coating systems is not only monitored by the obligatory tests accompanying production, but also by way of additional laboratory tests such as salt spray, condensation water and heat storage tests, which are performed regularly by Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung. In addition, a monitoring audit is carried out once a year by KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), during which samples of these coating systems are regularly taken for external testing.
