Pipes for the Water Supply System in Angola

Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH (SMID) and Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH (MGR) are supplying CNT Bau with approximately 50,000 tons of spiral-welded large-diameter pipes and pipe fittings for the ambitious Quilonga Grande water supply system.
CNT Bau, based in Munich, is a subsidiary of the Casais Group, one of Portugal’s largest construction companies.
The goal of the project is to sustainably modernize the drinking water supply for the Angolan capital, Luanda, and adapt it to the continuous population growth.

 

Group-wide Collaboration and Technical Implementation

This project is a prime example of group-wide collaboration. Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH is responsible for financing, coordination, and all logistics up to the port in Luanda, and is also procuring pipe bends and other accessories. Mannesmann Grossrohr GmbH and Mannesmann Line Pipe GmbH are manufacturing the pipes at their facilities in Salzgitter and Hamm. Pipes with diameters ranging from 508 mm to 1,626 mm are being used for the various sections of the system, which have a total length of approximately 110 km. The pipes are manufactured from spiral-welded continuous strip and meet high standards for load-bearing capacity and service life.

 

High-quality raw material from Salzgitter Flachstahl for a sustainable water supply

Salzgitter Flachstahl supplies the majority of the raw material for these large-diameter pipes, with sheet thicknesses ranging from 8 mm to over 16 mm. The material quality is thoroughly tested, with particular emphasis on chemical analysis and product properties such as strength, elongation, toughness, hardness, microstructure, and purity.
In addition, Salzgitter Flachstahl offers a broad product range for the pipe sector in general, including hot-rolled wide strip up to 25 mm thick and hot-rolled strip from 1.5 to 6 mm thick for precision pipes.
The Quilonga Grande project paves the way for a sustainable and future-oriented drinking water supply in the ever-growing capital of Luanda and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
