Press-forming aid and abrasion reducer for hot-dip galvanized sheet - Trenoil Advanced Tribo Primer (ATP)

15.02.2023 | Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH

Almost all automobile manufacturers design the exterior panels of their vehicles to include often quite pronounced swage lines that are typical of the brand. A swage in this sense is a ribbing effect sculpted into the steel sheet. This is both a design feature and a weight-neutral means of stiffening large-area sheet steel components. They contribute to the brand's recognition value and, by reducing the tendency of the sheet metal to flutter, enhance the acoustic comfort of the vehicles.

For press-shops and tool-making, sharp edges of all kinds pose a challenge, given that these impair the even flow of the material and are a cause of tool abrasion. Whereas for applications such as this, electrolytically galvanized steel sheet which exhibits the highest quality surface finish (exposed) is provided with an abrasion-reducing phosphate coating, in view of the surface chemistry, this principle cannot be applied to hot-dip galvanized sheet.

As an alternative, Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH in collaboration with development partner Fuchs Lubricants Germany GmbH has developed Trenoil ATP as a conversion treatment for sheet that is hot-dip galvanized (GI-X). In combination with the well-known 1st and 2nd generation Prelube lubricants, 2. Trenoil ATP allows hot-dip galvanized sheet to be press-formed in a process that is material-friendly. ATP forms a thin, oil-resistant but water-soluble layer which separates the tool surface from the surface of the sheet more effectively than lubricants alone. Trenoil ATP is colorless and odorless, presents no risks to health, and is compatible with the body- and paint-shop processes employed by the OEM.
So convincing is the effect in the press shop, that ATP has already been approved by one OEM customer for the production of exterior panels.

Customers of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH who wish to exploit the advantages of Trenoil ATP in their production processes can specify this treatment for all sheet steel grades and dimensions typically used to produce exterior panels.

Trenoil ATP
  • reduces abrasion and wear
  • improves press-forming performance
  • contains no mandatorily declarable ingredients
  • compatible with typical body- and paint-shop processes
