There is something happening in the power plant ...

A new machine is being built on the work floors of the power plant, it is a new turbine with generator - the new machine 4.

The planning for this investment started two and a half years ago. The aim was to ensure the supply for Salzgitter Flachstahl with electrical energy and also to strengthen the supply of the city of Salzgitter and commercial customers with district heating.

The place of location is a workshop, which guarantees both the connection to the 80 bar steam collecting track and center of the district heating. An examination of the foundation was positive, so that the new machine could be built on the old foundation, which reduced the costs significantly.

After the tender offer, the order for the turbine and generator as well as the auxiliary equipment was contracted to MAN Energy Solution in June 2018.

The construction site was opened in January 2020, the turbine and generator were delivered at the end of March and lifted with great effort to a height of 11 m in order to be subsequently set down on the old foundations. Both aggregates each weighed approx. 70 t and were therefore too heavy for the hall crane, so these parts had to be lifted with a so-called strand jack system.

The new plant is expected to be ready for operation at the end of July 2020. Extensive performance records will follow. The plant will be available for electricity and district heating.

Machine 4 will sustainably strengthen the steel mill's infrastructure.
