The advantages of winter packaging

24.10.2024 | Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH

Salzgitter Flachstahl advises customers to order winter packaging material in preparation for the “cold season” from October to March. This applies especially to the protection of cold, rolled, hot-dip galvanized and chemically passivated cold-rolled steel without oil coating.

In the cold season, material without oil coating is particularly sensitive to environmental factors such as the weather, climate zones, and storage and shipping conditions. In addition to the direct influence of humidity caused by precipitation, particular attention should be paid to the development of condensed water. Condensed water results from the cooling of warm, humid air on cold surfaces. Any greater rise of the temperature, which is typical for the cold season, will lead to the condensation of water on all surfaces exposed to the air, including the coil windings which are exposed to air gaps. Formation of white rust is to be expected if this dampness is not countered by means of proper ventilation.

Therefore, Salzgitter Flachstahl recommends winter packaging in order to counteract the impact of suddenly rising temperatures or of persistent high humidity. Condensation also develops on the packaging surface, but after a temperature equilibrium of at least two days it is possible to unpack the coil.

Salzgitter Flachstahl uses the proven fiber-reinforced and PE-coated sodium crêpe paper for winter packaging. The packaging of course be adapted to suit individual requirements. If you have any questions about storing or transport, please contact our sales team or technical customer services.
