For versatility: HCT780C complex phase steel with hot-dipped coating

Salzgitter Flachstahl offers the HCT780C in accordance with DIN EN 10346 and HCT780Cxpand® (or CR570Y780T-CP in accordance with VDA 239-100), a material to implement the most demanding component geometries while ensuring the greatest process stability.

Complex phase steels have a higher yield strength than dual phase steels in the same strength class, and consequently offer somewhat lower elongation at break. The special feature of these grades is the low edge crack sensitivity, which is substantiated by a high hole expansion ratio. It is possible to achieve a hole expansion level that is 1.5 to 2 times greater than that for classic dual phase steels. Salzgitter Flachstahl offers with the hot-dipped galvanized HCT780Cxpand® an innovative material, which is optimized by the higher hole expansion ratio and guarantees the user a hole expansion ratio of 40 percent.

This grade's characteristics are possible thanks to a carefully achieved proportion of different microstructure components. The steel predominantly contains bainite, with smaller amounts of ferrite and only traces of further phase components. The homogeneous, fine-grained microstructure is set by means of defined temperature control at the hot-dip galvanizing lines.

Due to processing characteristics such as

  • Outstanding formability at the edges
  • An above-average bending angle
  • Elongations at break exceeding 10%
  • As well as a high yield strength, tensile strength and fatigue properties

the HCT780C is suitable for complex, cold-formed components in the automotive industry that have to stand up to high demands. Particularly if complex forming operations have to be carried out at the edges, for example, in order to introduce punctures, the complex phase steel is of interest due to its low crack formation. If this characteristic is taken into consideration in the design, it is possible to reduce the joining processes and realize substantial light-weight construction potential.
