  • Exchange on low-CO2 steel intensified
  • Ford to push ahead with the use of green steel products

The Salzgitter Group is working closely with customers and partners to achieve climate protection goals – true to our strategic motto of “partnering for circular solutions”. Automobile manufacturer Ford and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH have now concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to support a closer exchange of ideas and cooperation on the issues of sustainable steel production and green steel products.

Ford intends to increase its use of green steel products in the coming years. In this regard, the SALCOS® - SAlzgitter Low CO2Steelmaking transformation program is attracting great interest, given that commencing by the end of 2025 the Salzgitter Group will be switching its steel production in stages to a hydrogen-based process. The goal is to achieve virtually CO2-free production from 2033 onwards.

Ford is a long-standing customer of Salzgitter Flachstahl which supplies the Ford plants in Spain, Romania, Cologne and Saarlouis with predominantly cold-rolled and hot-dip galvanized steel products. In addition, Ford also sources tailored blanks (laser-welded sheet in varying grades) from Salzgitter Europlatinen GmbH.

Phillip Meiser, Sales Director at Salzgitter Flachstahl, said: “This collaboration also shows that customers have confidence in SALCOS® as a route to green steelmaking, and perceive value added in the transformation to green steel. So this MOU brings us a step closer to the sustainability goals of both our companies.”
