Clausthal University of Technology has awarded Ulrich Grethe, former member of the Group Executive Board, an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing. E.h.) - a well-deserved recognition for his decades of work in the steel industry and his services to innovation and transformation at the Salzgitter steel location.
Ulrich Grethe began his career in Salzgitter in 1989 as a trainee in the steelworks. Born in Duisburg, he had previously studied metallurgy and materials science at the Technical University of Clausthal. After further positions in the steelworks with management functions, Grethe took over the technical management of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in 2006. Over many years, he took on increasing responsibility - and was appointed Chairman of the Management Board of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH in 2010. From 2014 until his retirement in 2024, he was a member of the Group Executive Board.
Gunnar Groebler, Chairman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG: "Ulrich Grethe has played a key role in shaping Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. His path from trainee to Chairman of the Executive Board and member of the Group Executive Board is emblematic of what can be achieved with drive, expertise and personal integrity. His close links to research institutions and in particular to Clausthal University of Technology have ensured that the Salzgitter Group is an important part of the research and development cluster in the steel landscape. We are delighted that Ulrich has now been awarded an honorary doctorate for this life's work and offer our warmest congratulations."
